NSR Corvette C6R - NSR1071 Unpainted Kit

By Mr Croker

First of all a little thank you. My wife for understanding why painting and photographing toy cars is important on a Saturday evening. However...
The NSR Vette is here and it is pay day!!!

It seems NSR have been around for a long time now. In the last year they have released two new classic cars - the beautiful P68 and the GT40. However this car marks the first time that they have revisited the modern GT car since their first release - the mighty Mosler which is now in it EVO3 guise. The Vette is their attempt to move the goal posts again...

What do you get?

Well no instructions (or a picture) for a start on this unpainted kit. The chassis is preassembled and the bodyshell a mass of parts. Not too taxing to figure out where things go although the rear fan moulding took a while as it mounts on the chassis but looks great through the photo-etched grille.

The interior is a define step up. Separate mouldings for the bulkhead, gear stick and button console really look the part and helpfully in opaque white plastic so painting them your colour (or color) of choice is easy. I really liked the effort to mould the rollcage as it fits really well a sets the interior off a treat.

The whole assemble is almost poured over the chassis when you line it up!

There is a lexan interior available shortly if you want to save a few grams.

The bodyshell is a mere 31mm high and so well moulded. Curvy and looks like a Corvette from all angles! Only a small gripe here as the beautifully shaped wing mirrors could do with a small mirrored insert.

I painted mine in a loose homage to the Factory Corvettes. Probably more C5R inspired but nice decals :)
The chassis.

This follows the design of the 997 GT3RS model released just before Christmas with the triangular anglewinder motor pod and the drop arm for the guide. Nice little clips moulded into the chassis keep the wires neat.

Before I go further it is worth pointing out the thing I really noticed about the whole car and that is quality and crispness of the mouldings. Really a cut above and everything is straight when I stripped the chassis down to check. The drop arm has nicely rounded corners so will not bind. The plastic pieces the motor pod screws go into have a curve to them which on the one nearest the motor allows a little extra clearance to the rear wheels should there be a need to fit larger ones. That isn't to say that you might need to de-flash a few parts.

Up front there is the drop arm which also has a screw supplied to allow the amount of movement to be limited or erased.

The front axle has grub screws top and bottom to allow the front axle to be set. The front wheels are the solid type 17x8 and the rear the NSR air hub.17x10w with Ultragrips be the feel of them.

The axles are the 2.37mm NSR 55mm and dead straight. Rear bearings the recessed brass type. The rear axle has three brass tube spacers to space the wheel or gear away from the bearing and the wheel from the gear. The gear ratio is a 14/31 which is very high and I suppose more suited for 12v racing. Coupled to the powerful KING 21 EVO it will massively quick -read too quick :) ) However the crown gear is now nicely anodised red.

A few stats:

Axle to axle - 82mm
Guide to front axle - 17mm
Rear Bodyshell - 64mm
Front Bodyshell - 62.2mm

So the big question is how does it go Mister?

As the paint wasn't done I didn't get to the Pinewood track on Thursday to test it so Monday night will answer the questions!

Since the 997 goes so well I expect this to be better as the extra wheelbase will bring a little more stability and I am pretty sure the rear is wider too.

As for NSR Mosler pace? It certainly looks the part. It will have the different stiffness motor pods and chassis. The spring kits for the motor pod are available as are the different gear ratio etc.
Conclusion.

An interesting model as NSR stated claim was to beat the fastest car in slot racing namely their very own Mosler. Time will tell on that front but the most interesting for me is that they have taken the time to cater for the other side of the hobby - the modeller. I do not doubt that it will not be mm perfect in scale but the sheer effort to use the best quality parts and manufacture the moulding is amazing for a small artisan company in Italy.

The main question I am left with is since this car is proudly manufactured in Italy why are other manufacturers with their Chinese production lines nearly the same price and that is without the same specification? It will have to be an excellent product to beat this to the release of 2011.

Not bad for January !
